Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band is a collaboration between blues legend Taj Mahal and a top-tier backing band. The Phantom Blues Band was originally formed in the 1990s to back Taj Mahal on his album Dancing the Blues, but has since gone on to have a successful career in their own right while continuing to tour and record with Mahal. They are known for blending various genres like blues, jazz, R&B, and rock, and the band members themselves are accomplished studio musicians who have worked with numerous famous artists. Taj Mahal (born Henry Saint Clair Fredericks in New York City on May 17, 1942) is an American Grammy Award-winning blues musician who incorporates elements of world music into his music. A self-taught singer, songwriter, and film composer who plays the guitar, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments), Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his 50 year career by fusing it with non-traditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.
