About

The Cowsills were a singing group from Newport, Rhode Island specializing in what would later be defined as bubblegum pop. The band was formed in the spring of 1965 by four brothers — Barry, Bill, Bob, and John Cowsill. After their initial success, the brothers were later joined by their siblings, Susan and Paul and their mother, Barbara. Rounding out the group was remaining brother Richard, who did not sing with the group, but was assigned as road manager and advisor. Read more on Last.fm

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the cowsills Mormon?
The Cowsills are not Mormon. The Cowsills are a family pop and rock band that rose to fame in the 1960s, known for their tight harmonies and wholesome image. While their clean-cut appearance and family-friendly music sometimes led fans to speculate about their religious background, the Cowsills are, in fact, of Roman Catholic faith. The family's Irish-American heritage played a significant role in their upbringing, and their Catholic faith was a prominent part of their personal lives. Their religious affiliation is distinct from that of many other popular family bands of the era, such as The Osmonds, who are well-known for their Mormon faith. The Cowsills' music and public persona reflected their family values rather than a specific religious denomination, and there is no evidence or record supporting any association with the Mormon church.
How many of the cowsills are still alive?
As of 2024, several members of The Cowsills are still alive and continue to perform. The original group consisted of siblings Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Paul, and Susan, along with their mother, Barbara. Sadly, Bill Cowsill passed away in 2006, and Barry Cowsill died in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina. Barbara, the family matriarch, died in 1985, and Richard, one of the siblings who was not part of the original performing group, died in 2014. The remaining Cowsill siblings

What happened to the lead singer of The Cowsills?
The lead singer of The Cowsills, Bill Cowsill, experienced a tumultuous life both during and after his time with the band. As the eldest sibling and one of the group's primary vocalists, Bill played a pivotal role in shaping the Cowsills' sound. However, internal family conflicts and personal struggles led to his departure from the band in the early 1970s. After leaving The Cowsills, Bill pursued a solo music career and later joined the Canadian band Blue Northern. Sadly, Bill battled substance abuse and health issues for many years. He ultimately passed away on February 18, 2006, at the age of 58, due to complications from emphysema and other health problems. Despite his challenges, Bill Cowsill's musical legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of The Cowsills' classic hits and the ongoing performances by his surviving siblings.
Are The Cowsills Mormon?
The Cowsills are not Mormon. This question often arises due to the group's wholesome image, which was reminiscent of other popular family bands like The Osmonds, who are known for their Mormon faith. However, the Cowsills' background is rooted in their Irish-American heritage and Roman Catholic faith. Their music and public persona reflected traditional family values, but there is no evidence or record of the Cowsills having any association with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism). The confusion may stem from their clean-cut style and family-oriented performances, but the Cowsills' religious background is distinctly Catholic. Fans interested in the band's history can rest assured that their legacy is tied more to their musical achievements and family story than to any particular religious affiliation.
